Diagnosis Type

Name Description
Data Domain: Diagnosis
Data Type: Text
Definition Diagnosis types are modifiers in i2b2 that are provided to help identify how a specific diagnosis code was associated with a patient. Depending on the type, these modifiers can identify if a diagnosis was made at the point of care by a provider or during billing.

Admitting Diagnosis
A diagnosis that was noted at the time of the patient’s admission.

Encounter Diagnosis
A diagnosis that was attached to the patient’s medical record by a provider during the encounter.

Hospital Billed Diagnosis
A diagnosis that is present on the patient’s final hospital bill. It may be interpreted by a medical coder from provider documentation, or may be taken directly from a code entered by a provider.

Inpatient Encounter Problem List
A diagnosis that was attached to a patient’s problem list for a specific inpatient record. This is not the same as a patient’s long term problem list.

Physician Billed Diagnosis
A diagnosis that is present on the patient’s final physician bill. Physician billing diagnoses may have been entered expressly for the purpose of justifying a particular test or procedure for insurance purposes, or to justify the visit itself.
