Vital Status

Name Description
Data Domain: Patient Demographics
Data Type: Text
Definition Vital status serves as an indicator of whether a patient is alive or deceased. This value is determined based off of a combination of a known birth date and the presence or absence of a death date as well as whether or not the patient is marked as ‘deceased’ in Epic or WebCIS.

Tip!
The best method of selecting patients who are “ALIVE” is to exclude “DECEASED” patients from your query.

Values for Vital Status:

  • Alive
  • Deceased
  • Unknown
Note!
Note that death dates are only available in i2b2 for those patients who died in a UNC Health Care System facility; if a patient dies at home or in another location, the date of death is generally not recorded. Linkage to the North Carolina State Death Index may be available from the CDW-H, but is not available in i2b2.
