Definition | Vital status serves as an indicator of whether a patient is alive or deceased. This value is determined based off of a combination of a known birth date and the presence or absence of a death date as well as whether or not the patient is marked as ‘deceased’ in Epic or WebCIS. Tip!

Note! Note that death dates are only available in i2b2 for those patients who died in a UNC Health Care System facility; if a patient dies at home or in another location, the date of death is generally not recorded.
